Public health and development projects:  


Goals of these projects:

  • Understand the sources, dynamics, health impacts, and control measures for infectious and parasitic diseases at the household, community, regional, and global levels.

  • Develop and implement statistical and epidemiological techniques and models used to establish causal links between environmental contaminants and ill-health. Establish links between environmental and health outcomes and population and economic development issues.

  • Generate practical policy recommendations founded on formal research.
     

 


Sub-projects:

1) Projection Scenarios of MDG indicators and financial requests: Maternal Mortality Rate

Purpose: The objective of the project is to determine the most cost effective ways to reach the Millennium Development Goal of reducing the rate of maternal mortality by 3/4 by the year 2015 utilizing methods of system dynamics.

Lead researcher: Martin Vargas.

Funding: Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

2) Tobacco and Poverty in Urban Bolivia

Purpose: The objective of this project is to determine how smoking affects the urban poor in Bolivia, and to design policies that reduce the adverse effects of smoking.  

Research team: Osvaldo Nina, Martin Vargas, Julio von Vacano, Mauricio Chumacero, Elena Fumagalli.

Funding: Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
