Dr. Lykke Andersen, Senior Researcher at INESAD, presented a working paper developed together with three of INESAD’s Ambassador Interns, Augustus Griffin, Justus J. Krause and Gabriel Orduña Montekio, titled “Measuring Equality of Opportunity in Early Childhood: A Methodological Proposal using Demographic and Health Surveys” on Friday the 1st of September at INESAD.
The document proposes a new method of measuring equality of opportunity in early childhood, based on the importance of family background variables (economic, educational and genetic) in determining the nutritional status of a child.
The authors applied the methodology to 166 Demographic and Health Surveys from 60 different countries, during the period 1991 to 2015. What stands out most from these estimations is the low level of equality of opportunity in Latin America, compared to the rest of the developing world.
