Dr. Lykke Andersen, Senior Researcher at INESAD, participated in this year’s PEGNet Conference, which was held in Zürich, Switzerland, on the 11th and 12th of September. The theme of the conference was “Understanding national inequalities and how to address them” and it brought together some of the World’s foremost experts on inequality.
Dr. Andersen participated as moderator of the Young Professional Keynote Address on Global Inequality, and also presented her own paper titled “Measuring Equality of Opportunity in Early Childhood: A Methodological Proposal using Demographic and Health Surveys” in a contributed session.
One other Bolivian, Pablo Evia, also participated in the conference with a paper on the impacts of the timing of cash transfers in Bolivia.
One of the encouraging conclusions of the conference is that inequality has decreased in most of the World since 2008. Inequality between countries has decreased particularly rapidly, while inequality within countries shows mixed tendencies. Nevertheless, twice as many countries have seen significant drops in inequality compared to countries that have seen significant increases. Latin America was the region that showed most consistent decreases in inequality since 2008, although starting from very high levels.
